Mugabe is trying to shore up legitimacy for his leadership after a presidential national election last friday where he was the only canidate. His political rival withdrew amid claims his supporters were targeted for violence.SOT: "Robert Mugabe is not the legitimate leader of Zimbabwe. He is usurping the power of the people, he has brutalised his own people, and therefore he is not ... deserve to participate in the forum of the AU The A-U isn't expected to do much to challenge Mugabe, but some members were speaking out. SOT: Raila Odinga, Kenya's Prime Minister: "The situation in Zimbabwe calls for nothing less than an intervention by the African Union. British Prime Minister Gordon Brown is urging the A-U to reject the result of Zimbabwe's presidential runoff. Jun 30 - US may slap unilateral sanctions against Zimbabwe after Robert Mugabe was re-elected over the weekend. The U.S. has prepared a draft resolution at the United Nations calling on the Security Countil to impose an arms embargo on Zimbabwe. Fred Katayama reports from New York.
