Pope Benedict stepped out of his car outside the Mary MacKillop Memorial Chapel at 9.45 am to cheers of "Benedetto! Benedetto!" from the crowd of pilgrims, local residents and media representatives who had been gathering since 5:30am hoping to catch a glimpse of him at Mary MacKillop Chapel, North Sydney.
