Tuesday, some people were fueling, and stocking up. (July 22)[Notes:various shots of] Dolly was just a tropical storm when it roared through Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula -- SOT: sleep through most of it .. Pretty uneventful for me. It brought high surf to Cancun -- strong winds ... And rains heavy enough to flood roads. [Notes:NASA satellite shot]But a look from space shows Dolly now churning in warm waters of the Gulf of Mexico, where it's gaining strength. [Notes:NOAA storm tracker] Forcasters say it should veer west, and slam into land just south of the U.S. - Mexico border, either late today, or early Wednesday - as a category one Hurricane. On south padre island, campers scrambled early Tuesday morning, *packing up* to get out of harms way.. (July 22)[Notes:ANCHOR VOICE] [Notes:road signs with warnings - KSAT]The warnings are clear over this south Texas highway -- get ready for some potentially dangerous weather.And locals are doing just that. [Notes:close of plywood - KSAT] Loading up sheets of plywood to protect their homes and prepare for what's predicted to be Hurricane Dolly.SOT: Frank Surrata, resident: "Last few years, we've had a lot of near misses. But that doesn't mean people are not going to get prepared. Cause we all seen what happened to Katrina and everything else. Better to spend the money now, than spend a lot more later." [Notes:NOAA video]Early Tuesday, the storm was still at Tropical Storm strength. But even that could mean high winds and up to 20 inches of rain. [Notes:map - AP Graphic] And the National Hurricane Center has issued a hurricane warning from Brownsville to Port O'Connor, with tropical storm warnings for even more of the Texas coast. [Notes:NOAA video]Forecasters predict by the time Dolly gets to land, it will be a Category 1 hurricane with sustained winds between 74 and 95 miles an hour. That may happen during the day Tuesday. [Notes:various of storm preps - KSAT] Meanwhile, the governor has activated 1200 National Guard troops and put hundreds of buses on standby in case an evacuation is necessary.And, people who live in the area are getting ready - waiting in long lines to get ahold of plywood, generators, flashlights and batteries. ___ ___, The Associated Press
Texas Bears Down For Dolly
Residents of coastal Texas are bracing for Hurricane Dolly. The Category 1 storm may strengthen before making landfall, and could dump 15 inches of rain. Dave Price reports from South Padre Island.
Hurricane Dolly takes aim at Texas coast
BROWNSVILLE, Texas - Hurricane Dolly strengthened early Wednesday as its leading edge lashed the Gulf Coast near the Texas-Mexico border with heavy rain and powerful winds.
Dolly, upgraded from a tropical storm Tuesday, had sustained winds of 95 mph, just short of becoming a Category 2 storm. At 9 a.m. EDT Wednesday, the storm's center was about 40 miles east of Brownsville, moving northwest at about 8 mph.
A hurricane warning was in effect for the coast of Texas from Brownsville to Corpus Christi and in Mexico from Rio San Fernando northward.
