Northwest reports second-quarter loss on fuel bill

Northwest Airlines Corp. - swung to a second-quarter net loss, the latest airline to be hurt by surging fuel costs.
But shares jumped 10% to $10 in pre-market trading as the company would have posted a profit excluding write-downs.

CHICAGO, July 23 (Reuters) - Northwest Airlines Corp (NWA.N: Quote, Profile, Research, Stock Buzz) reported a quarterly net loss on Wednesday, reversing a year-earlier profit, on skyrocketing fuel prices.
The carrier, which plans to merge with Delta Air Lines Inc (DAL.N: Quote, Profile, Research, Stock Buzz), said its second-quarter net loss amounted to $377 million, or $1.43 per share, compared with a profit of $2.1 billion a year earlier.
