NEW YORK (AP) - Carlos Delgado hit a tiebreaking, two-run double in the eighth inning and Oliver Perez stifled the Philadelphia Phillies again, helping the New York Mets earn a 3-1 win Thursday that gave them sole possession of first place in the NL East.
Perez struck out 12 in 7 2-3 innings, and Billy Wagner got three outs for his second save in as many days. The Mets took two of three in the series after blowing a three-run lead in the ninth inning of the opener, putting them alone in first place for the first time since April 19.

Carlos Delgado had a two-run double in the bottom of the eighth Thursday to propel the Mets to a 3-1 win over the Phillies.
Delgado's double off J.C. Romero was the Mets' only extra-base hit of the game. Incredibly, Delgado again went hitless off Phillies starter Jamie Moyer, leaving him 2-for-13 with a mere solo homer against him this season. He entered the year with a .431 average, seven homers and seven doubles in 65 career at-bats versus Moyer. Jul. 24 - 2:42 pm et

Flushing, NY (Sports Network) - Carlos Delgado's two-run double in the eighth inning provided the winning margin, and the New York Mets moved into first place in the National League East with a 3-1 win over the Philadelphia Phillies in the rubber match of a three-game set at Shea Stadium.
Oliver Perez allowed a run on six hits and struck out a season-high 12 in 7 2/3 innings but didn't factor in the decision for the Mets, who have won three of four and lead the Phils by one game in the East. Aaron Heilman (1-3) retired one batter to earn the win, while Billy Wagner notched his 26th save.

With the contest tied 1-1, two on and two outs in the bottom of the eighth inning, the much maligned first baseman laced an offering from losing pitcher J.C. Romero (4-3) down the line in left field.

By Anthony DiComo / MLB.com NEW YORK - Success has now given Carlos Delgado a seat of power. A cleanup hitter for the overwhelming majority of his big league career, Delgado entered Wednesday's game having batted fourth in the lineup only twice this season. But Delgado's recent hot streak changed things, and so Mets manager Jerry Manuel changed things as well.
Delgado, and not Carlos Beltran, manned the cleanup spot in the Mets' lineup Wednesday night, marking the first time he's done so in over a month. That shifted Beltran to fifth, a position he hasn't assumed since June 15, 2003, with the Royals.

New York Mets - Jul 23, 2008
By Jon Blau / MLB.com NEW YORK - Carlos Delgado's home run in the third inning of Tuesday night's game could have amounted to so much more than a number.
The two-run shot was a strong pull for the Mets in a tussle for first place with the Phillies. On top of that, it was another signature blast for Delgado this July, an 18-game stretch in which the first baseman has hit .403. And, in a leap towards baseball immortality, Delgado jumped Jeff Bagwell for 33rd place on the all-time home run list with 450 -- another 50 away from the 500-home run plateau.

When the Mets were in Philadelphia over the July 4 weekend, they faced the possibility of their season going up in flames if they were swept.
Instead, the Mets won three of four to jump-start a 10-game winning streak, which helped them into a first-place tie in the National League East on Sunday.
